A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Aboard a UK Fishing Vessel
It will cost you around about 100 pounds to get the Basic Sea Survival Certification. After this you will meet the minimum requirements to sail on a UK Fishing Vessel.
This affords you 3 months to see if you like the Commercial Fishing Industry and see if you can see yourself enjoying it and a career path you can see yourself excelling in?
Then you must gain another 3 basic certificates within those 3 months to continue at sea. Those Certificates are each one day courses and will each cost you about 100 pounds. There are a good few choices of career path and it is a career that could take you round the world if you wanted it to! Now to get this certificate Google your nearest Seafish Training Provider and give them a call to register your interest in the next running of the course or head on over via training@seafish.co.uk we are hoping with time to expand a list of potential contacts that are better placed to find a new start a berth considering the lack of advertising this career path seems to get finding a berth shouldn’t be an issue.
What you must understand
What you must understand is where as many in the UK Fishing Industry are keen to give anybody with an interest a start, there’s a couple of things you need to consider: You do need to really give this your all and respect the skipper is taking a chance on his day or his trips earnings by seeing how you go! Their time at sea is precious for their own livelihood and as much as everyone understands this isn’t the job for everyone you need to give it 100 percent which shouldn’t be a big ask as this should be the same in any new job.
Being a new start I would definitely suggest a smaller day boat to start with, more on the different types of trips, vessels, career paths and certification you might choose to take in other blog posts.
